Review Detail

The story:

Sawyer is an orphaned girl who lives in a world not unlike that of the Terminator movies, where machines have taken over and now roam the streets searching for the last remaining humans. She is a Watcher, a skilled tracker and eliminator. However, when the machines seem to be getting smarter, she and her crew must risk everything to discover why, and to stop it


What I loved:

I love me some good dystopian settings, and in that regard, Watcher does not disappoint. Sawyer is a terrific main character, tough yet vulnerable, and I connected her right away. Ms. Eversley surrounded Sawyer with a full cast of memorable characters, especially Max and Kenzie. The setting was well-described, the action well-realized, and it drew real emotion from this reader.


What I didn’t love:

After the opening action scene, it took quite a few chapters for the pace to pick up again and all the pieces to fall together, but once it did, it never let go. Coleman, the story’s villain, wasn’t my favorite bad guy of all time, but I think there’s a lot of background we haven’t realized yet.


My Final Verdict:

I would recommend Watcher to anyone who likes dystopian novels, especially in the vein of the Terminator movies. There are quite a few books in this series, includes several short novellas that explore the backgrounds of many of the characters, so once you’re hooked, be prepared to read every word!
