It's been a while since I've read a Rin Chupeco book and thought it would be the perfect time to dive back in.
We're Not Safe Here is told in different media formats. There are texts, message boards, videos, and drawings. I will state that I listened to this book rather than physically reading it so my review may be a little different than those who physically read. I will state that I think this book would highly benefit from reading and listening.
The audio cast is a full cast and did an amazing job bringing this story to life. I loved that they went all out and each had their own voice actors, as this would not have done the book justice any other way. However, since the book is told through message boards and drawings - I feel like I missed out on some of that with just listening to the book. If you want the full experience, I highly recommend throwing the earbuds in and listening as you read. It really would be the best way to consume this story.
As for the story itself, I thought it was interesting. The mystery behind the cryptids and Whispy Falls definitely kept my focus throughout the whole thing. However, there were some major plot holes. How does Whispy Falls still have so much technology and internet and just everything. It states they are the only known town but....just how big is this town? It seems like it's the size of a whole state but it's just them? These continuity issues kept me from really grasping everything.
Storymancer and Jellybean are our two main protagonist. Storymancer wants to know what happened to his brother after he went missing in the woods. Jellybean is determined to figure out what has been driving the distance between her and her mother. As they dive into the truth behind whispy falls, they discover conspiracies and false information. And just how far some people may go to keep the truth a secret.
Overall, We're Not Safe Here by Rin Chupeco was a great cryptid horror mystery. If you like creepy pasta's and conspiracies - this book is definitely for you. The multi-media formatting in this book truly makes you feel like you are part of the investigation into what is going on in Whispy Falls. The audio was amazingly done with a full cast but I truly think some of the thrill was missed without the physical book in front of me. I would highly recommend listening and reading this book side by side to truly understand the secrets of this town.
