Amity Callaway can’t believe her mother decides to move them clear across the country before college. Amity has her life mapped out. She planned on going on a taco road trip with her bestie Taylor, then going to college to become an archivist.
Figures the house her mother buys is the local haunted one, which has attracted the attention of amateur ghost hunter Theo Hargrave. After an awkward run-in on her property to prove the existence of an urban legend ghost, Amity makes it her goal to prove ghosts don’t exist. Or do they? Add to all this the rising emotions Amity has whenever Theo is around, which could be scarier than any ghost.
What worked: Loved the voice of this captivating paranormal romance. Great chemistry right at the start. Add to all this the great pacing and, at times, hilarious dialogue. What’s not to love?
Amity considers herself ‘weird’ as she doesn’t fit into society’s version of a young adult. Amity, though, is someone who is outspoken, fearless, and determined. She would be the perfect friend to hang with.
The ghost element builds slowly with odd things happening in the house, including Amity finding parts of a journal from a girl from the 1600s that hints about witchcraft going terribly wrong. Amity and Theo enlist the help of Matt, a resident ghost hunter, and Arden, a nonbinary former library employee. I really enjoyed the banter between Arden and Amity.
There is a séance with a spell that isn’t too scary. There are ghosts that aren’t spooky at all. Plus, small-town vibes and intriguing history behind an urban legend.
But saying all that, the growing romance between Amity and Theo really drives this story. Their budding chemistry is sweet and not over the top.
Enchanting paranormal romance with two adorable characters who set out to release a ghost from a local haunted house while falling for each other in the process. A fun summer read!
