Lucky earns his powers
What Worked: Lucky and his fin-tastic four friends decide the best costume for the upcoming Scary Splash Monster Bash is to go as the scary Great Ghost shark. Lucky has no magic sparkle powers of his own, but Poseidon has given him magical shells to help. They win the contest as great ghost sharks with the help of the magical shells to shapeshift.
However, their costumes attracted a real great ghost shark. The friends put their fear aside long enough to learn it is just a kid that has lost her parents. Lucky and his friends work together to help Doris, the great ghost shark. She trusts them enough to share the secret of her sparkle power. Lucky is rewarded with a great gift once Doris is reunited with her parents for his selflessness. Lucky now has a great responsibility to go along with his new gift.
Final Verdict: With magical half unicorn-half mermaids for characters this is sure to appeal to many elementary readers. It is geared for second and third graders and I would agree with that assessment based on the plot and the difficulty of the text. It is the fourth book in the series, but it was easy to follow even reading it out of order of the series. It promotes good traits such as dependability, loyalty, and friendship.
