Twin sisters Maddie and Jo Livingston
have spent their lives traveling the world with their famous archaeologist parents.
But when the Livingstons’ work takes them on a mysterious year-long excavation
in Siberia, much too dangerous for two twelve-year-old girls, Maddie and Jo are
whisked off to a castle in Switzerland, where they find themselves piecing
together a mystery of their own.
Madame Molineaux’s School for Girls
is filled with interesting students and professors from all over Europe. But it
doesn’t take long for the girls to figure out that this is no ordinary boarding
school: bizarre animals, hidden tapestries, secret tunnels, and a long list of
unanswered questions keep Maddie, Jo, and their new friends searching for clues
around every corner. Where is that snotty Rosemary Byron going when she sneaks
out of her dormitory at night? What secret is their beloved headmistress trying
to protect? Who is concealing treasures in the unlikeliest of hiding places?
The girls must put all these strange pieces together to discover the staggering
truth, and to save their school before Madame Molineaux’s closes its doors—for
good!
Favorite Childhood Books
As a child, I devoured any book that took me out of my suburban upbringing. It wasn’t that I didn’t like my life—I did! But I needed more glamour, fantasy, and sophistication than . . . the cornfield across from my neighborhood 🙂 I truly enjoyed my down-to-earth growing up, and here were the books that took me on much-needed adventures.
Heidi by Johanna Spyri: I loved both the mountain village and city settings of this classic novel. The alpine atmosphere absolutely set me up to love that kind of aesthetic, and I even named my headmistress, Klara Kronenberg, after one of Heidi’s dear friends. I treasure this story, it was one of the first long chapter books I read.
The Nancy Drew Mysteries by (all the people who write under the pseudonym) Carolyn Keene: I mean, what’s not to love here? A teen-aged detective, the early 20th century, and what felt like an unlimited number of books in the series—I was hooked! I still enjoy looking at these on my bookshelf. They’re falling apart by now, but I hope my daughter can enjoy them, too.
Hans Christian Andersen’s Fairy Tales: We had a couple of collections of these tales in our house, and there were so many that I could read them, re-read them a year later, and they still had that “new story” feel. Some of these were a bit scary or morbid to my younger self, but the lessons were worth it.
The Turn of the Screw by Henry James: This one was mandatory reading for my high school English class, but I fell in love with the period and the setting. It ends poorly, for more than one character, but the writing, the length, and the aesthetic are enough to keep me going back for more. Definitely the spookiest one of the bunch.
Pippi Longstocking by Astrid Lindgren: This story captivated me from page one. The regular kids with the eccentric neighbor on a horse? I wished Pippi had been my neighbor, too. The original film is a must-watch as well.
And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie: My favorite of all her mysteries. I would have sworn the Clue movie was based on it, but officially, it’s not. Could have fooled me!
The Cat Who … Mystery Series by Lillian Jackson Braun: If you’re looking for light-hearted, entertaining mysteries with a lovable, quirky, solo detective (with a cat as his mystery-solving sidekick), this series is for you. I tore through these in two or three days each as a teenager, and they’re great pre-sleep sleuthing or as beach books.
If you haven’t read these, I hope you check them out! It’s the perfect time of year for some tea, a blanket, and a cozy story. All of these stories influenced Twin Sisters Livingston, so let me know if you recognize any subtle nods tucked away in the pages of my first novel.
