Kid Review: I Love You To the Moon and Back All Year Long by Amelia Hepworth

About This Book:

In this follow-up to the best-selling I Love You to the Moon and Back, a bear and cub experience the seasons and celebrate their love that stays strong all year long.

This sweet story that follows on the best-selling I Love You to the Moon and Back is a warm celebration of the love between parent and child. In spring, the cub marvels at the way the new plants grow; summer brings hot days of playing under the sun; in fall, the two crunch in leaves that have fallen from the trees; and when winter comes around again, the snowflakes cheer the winter skies as they fall asleep beneath the Moon’s light. This is the perfect book to share with a little one at bedtime.

Love throughout the seasons

In this follow up to I Love You to the Moon and Back and I Love You Forever and a Day, young bear must still feel anxious and unloved. This time, Bear and Little Bear go through all of the seasons, and discuss the activities that they like to do that are enriched by being able to do them together. From the melting snow to the crunchy leaves, the bears are out in the ever changing elements, spending time together and show each other how much they care.

Good Points
This reminded me a bit of a Little Golden Book with new collie puppies that were amazed at the changes each season brings. The illustrations of the evolving outdoors are richly colored and detailed, and show the bears frolicking no matter what the weather brings, although they do huddle under a tree with their friends when it rains. Of course, at the end of the book, they retreat to their cave and cuddle up together for the long winter ahead.

The verse has a nice cadence to it, and most of the lines start with “I love to…” which is a reassuring thing with which to start each new idea. The rhyme and rhythm flow smoothly, and make this a quick read, which is important when little ones are cranky and in need of sleep but need “one more story”!

My own children enjoyed Sam McBratney’s classic Guess How Much I Love You, and this is a great version for modern children. I liked it much better than Munsch’s Love You Forever, which always seemed a better odd! If this book isn’t enough to make your child feel loved, you can continue your reading with Joose’s Mama, Do You Love Me, Cusimano’s You Are My I Love You, and Melmed’s I Love You As Much. You could also throw in Margaret Wise Brown’s The Runaway Bunny for something different; just that little bit of stalking!
