Kids Review: The Cat on the Dovrefell: A Christmas Tale (Tomie DePaola)

About This Book:

A very large cat may be the key to saving Christmas in this wryly humorous retelling of the Norwegian fairy tale The Cat on the Dovrefjell.

When a man captures a great white bear, he is determined to bring it as a gift to the king of Finnmark. But to do that, first he must cross the Dovrefells—a mountain covered in snow and ice—in the middle of winter. On Christmas Eve, he reaches the house of a man named Halvor, and asks if he can stay the night. Halvor warns that every year on Christmas Eve, trolls come down from the mountains to take over his home, but the man and his polar bear think they may just be able to help…

A Big Kitty Surprise

I am unfamiliar with the original Norwegian Fairytale that The Cat on the Dovrefell is based upon, but it did not prevent me from enjoying this version. Fans of Tomie De Paola will love his illustrative style that again brings the tale he weaves to life. Halvor’s family is used to creating a large feast to appease the trolls while his family flees their visit each Christmas. Then one Christmas, in an act of kindness, they allow a man traveling with a polar bear to stay. The trolls mistake the bear for a housecat and get a hilarious surprise. Overall, this tale will be a fun read perfect for fans of Tomie DePaola, folktales, and Christmas.
