In Astronaut Hayley’s Brave Adventure, Hayley has learned to be brave even when scared her whole life but now something different has happened. Hayley has to be courageous as she gets sick so she learns to be brave in new ways. Hayley recovers and is invited to be an astronaut and go into outer space and she has to remember to be brave on this adventure.
What I Liked: This book opens by showing you all the activities that Hayley does on a regular basis in which she is brave such as her first day of school. Then suddenly you see Hayley’s attitude change as she gets really sick and starts losing her hair but even through this, she remains brave. Hayley just finds different ways in which to be brave during this time until she recovers and is invited to be an astronaut.
While this book does start off heavy and sad, it’s exciting as you get to see Hayley go on this amazing adventure with others and watch as she uses her courage when obstacles are in her way. There is a bit of suspense that arises when Hayley is up in space and has to fix something on the spaceship. This is a great opportunity for Hayley to show how brave she is not just to others but also to prove to herself that this is something that she can do. The book shows how Hayley struggles with her fears before and during her task when things aren’t going how she wants them to but it also shows how perseverance helps her with the obstacle that has appeared.
The illustrations throughout this book take readers on an amazing adventure through space that captures the vastness and wonder of the universe which is sure to captivate a young audience. The pages are filled with vibrant images highlighting the best parts of being an astronaut as well as some of the rougher portions where Hayley is battling her sickness. The characters’ facial expressions perfectly match the emotions that are conveyed in the text throughout the book. The balance between images and text is well executed which ensures that the illustrations complement the narrative instead of being overwhelming.
