When a young girl's father is scared of the unicorns in her book, she hides it to protect him.
At the next bedtime, she selects a book about giraffes, which are much less scary. Right? Wrong!

After her dad helps her overcome a fear of her own, he reveals that he is scared of the words in her books, not the animals. Together the father and daughter use positive visualizations to overcome their fears.

Based on Cassie Silva's own experience growing up with an ESL (English as a second language) parent, this story is a love letter to all the ESL and illiterate parents and grandparents who get asked to read children bedtime stories.

The Fearless Storyteller addresses an issue rarely discussed in children's literature. Being Illiterate, whether from a language barrier, not being able to read English or Spanish or another language, never learning to read due to growing up circumstances, or just struggling with other reading problems. At first, the young girl believes her dad is afraid of the various animals in her books, so she hides her books to protect her dad. What a sweet message, but eventually, her dad says he is not afraid of the animals. He is scared of big words. He doesn’t want to ruin this special moment with his daughter by stumbling over harder words, but just like her dad helps her face her fears of monsters in the dark, she helps him to imagine he can be brave when facing new words. It is a great book for anyone who struggles with reading, and with excellent illustrations, the message is clear: we all can become fearless storytellers.
