Middle-Grade Review: Faiza Is a Fighter (Debasmita Dasgupta)

About This Book:

Life in hilly northern India is not easy. Every day, Faiza has to scale the mountains to reach her school or to fetch water from the stream. Faiza doesn’t have many friends or relatives who believe in her, but her dream of being a world champion boxer and the support of her only parent, her dad, and her grandma keeps her going.
When her dad’s travel is delayed due to a landslide, she has to enter the boxing tournament without her coach and support system. Will she give up or forge out on her own? Sometimes your biggest cheerleader is the voice inside of you. Fight, Faiza, fight!

Faiza Is a Fighter is a gorgeously illustrated and uplifting story of a young girl’s journey to pursue her dreams. Readers follow the main character, Faiza, who lives with her grandmother and Father in northern India. Though life is a bit tougher due to their rough landscapes and home setting, they don’t let that stop them from moving forward. Faiza whose name translates to “winner” from Arabic is determined to enter the boxing tournament after being inspired by a female boxer’s win. She will stop at nothing to learn the art of the sport, but how will she handle the tournament when circumstances have her competing by herself?

The story is short and sweet but packs a powerful punch with its overarching message of perseverance. This is detailed in the illustration as Faiza denounces her school bullies, training with limited resources, and being motivated by the words of her father. She reaches a point of vulnerability reminding us that it’s okay to be scared to reach our goals and throughout the story shows how success is not linear. I especially enjoyed the one-on-one moments between her and her family who encouraged her to reach her goals.

The novel is aimed at readers 9 and up, but I believe this graphic novel can also be enjoyed by younger audiences as well (grades 2-3). The story is rich with culture and does a good job of introducing a bit of Indian customs that some readers may be unfamiliar with. It has a message that is relatable and inspiring to a wide audience, making it a positive reading experience.

Reading this graphic novel reminds readers that you can be your biggest cheerleader! I loved Dasgupta’s colorful illustrations that not only highlighted Faiza’s vibrant nature but reflected the passion represented in the story. Faiza Is a Fighter put a smile on my face and it sure to do the same for you.
