Cousins introduces you to a family made up of many people with various talents. This book showcases the importance of family and how cousins are lifelong friends.

What I liked: This book opens by introducing summer time and how the main character loves this time because she gets to be with all her cousins, whom she finds amazing. The book then goes on to explain the reasons why each of those cousins is amazing and shows the children playing and having a great time together. It closes with the main character wishing they could keep their cousins with them at all times and then realizing that she keeps them in her heart, and how her memories let her keep them with her. The closing of this book is peaceful as the main character hands with her pets, looking at images that highlight various parts of her summer.

The illustrations throughout this book are fun and vibrant, while there are some realistic elements, there are also some more fun element,s such as the beach balls that are as large as the children playing with them, or the various kinds of animals that are around like a dog that looks like a tiger. While the children throughout the book are all related to each other, they also have distinct characteristics that make them look different, such as various skin tones and differently textured hair.

Final Verdict: Cousins goes on a journey through a large family, sharing each thing that the main character loves about each family member and what makes them unique. Children will enjoy hearing about the unique things each of the cousins is interested in and seeing the images of what the children are getting up to during their summer together. This is a great book to teach about the importance of family and how everyone’s unique interests and skills come together.
