It’s the classic ugly duckling tale—but this time around, the little one turns out not to be a swan, but a dragon. And when their duckling siblings find themselves in trouble, it's our little fire-breathing friend who saves the day. Whereas Hans Christian Andersen's original is synonymous with inner beauty, Frank Cammuso’s loving update turns it into a parable of inner strength.

THE FIRE-BREATHING DUCKLING is a cute graphic novel, perfect for independent readers. When some eggs hatch, one duckling feels different from the others. As this duckling goes on a journey to find out what they are, a bird helps them to see if they might fit in with other barnyard animals. When all the animals are running from a wolf who wants to eat them, the duckling breathes fire, scaring away the wolf and saving the day!
What I loved: This is an ultimately sweet story about feeling different and finding your place. The panels of the graphic novel were easy to follow with a heavy reliance on images to help tell the story. This works so well for early independent readers, who will also appreciate the repetitive text and easy-to-follow speech bubbles. The story felt formulaic, which also helps with ease of reading and digesting as readers gain confidence.
The illustrations were colorful and charming, with lots of adorable animals and the baby dragon throughout. The characters felt expressive and engaging, which helps to keep readers turning pages. Some humorous moments throughout will also endear the duckling to the reader and add to the fun of the book.
Ultimately, the length of the story was also great for early independent readers, who will be able to easily read the whole book without fatiguing.
Final verdict: THE FIRE-BREATHING DUCKLING is a charming and engaging graphic novel, perfect for independent readers gaining confidence!

A comic retelling of the Hans Christian Andersen legend of The Ugly Duckling, The Fire-Breathing Duckling was such an adorable journey of self-discovery for the poor out-of-place dragon duckling.
Like the original story, The Fire-Breathing Duckling is a tale of true beauty and identity that are not defined by outward appearance or how others perceive you, but by your inner self and the potential for growth and belonging.
The story will resonate with readers, especially those still trying to find where they belong.
This was a fun read recommended for readers in first and second grade, but those in Kindergarten will find joy in this story as well.
The illustrations are beautiful and bright. Each comic panel is full of color and energy as the little dragon encounters all the different animal characters around the farm.
The Fire-Breathing Duckling is a take on an all-time classic that has the potential to become a favorite with generations to come!
