Necromancy has been banned for one hundred years in the city of San Guadario, and every part of life requires a signature written in one’s blood. This requirement is so that a necromancer’s identity would be revealed should they sign something. Victor, a necromancer, and his one-eyed cat have to live discreetly so that no one finds out his secret. Things change for him, though, when the wealthiest man in San Guadario hires Victor to resurrect his recently deceased bride. The only problem with this is that the ritual that would bring her back to life would bind Victor to this bride. Is Victor now stuck in San Guadario? Will anyone notice the bride brought back to life and suspect his involvement?
What I Liked: This book begins by introducing you to Victor, and you instantly love him and are rooting for the best for him. While Enrique Olivarez isn’t instantly a lovable character, he does grow on you as you see him struggle to win back the affections of his bride, Mercedes. Enrique wasn’t expecting the results that he received when he hired Victor to revive Mercedes, but he does well with coping with those results, and you can see the love he has for this woman.
The illustrations throughout this book do a great job of transporting you into the scenes and setting the tone for the story. The scenes are mostly dark, matching the bride’s colors as she comes back to life, and the colors shift based on who is involved in the scene. This book ensures that you know who is speaking at all times and whether what is being shared is being spoken aloud or is primarily a thought.
The relationships throughout this book will keep you reading and engaged, waiting to see how things play out. It’s fascinating to watch Victor navigate new feelings, Mercedes trying to find out information about her past and coming to terms with her death, and Enrique coming to terms with who Mercedes is now and the idea that he may have to regain her trust and love. The various things that these three get into are intriguing, and the magic that is involved captures your attention and ensures that you’ll read this book to the end and want more of everyone you met.
Final Verdict: Love Me to Death is an action-filled adventure that throws you into the action right from page one. The end of this book keeps you hanging, and you’ll want to instantly have more of these three characters that you have grown to love. This book is perfect for those who are fans of graphic novels, fantasy books, books with supernatural elements, and books about death and dying.
