Middle-Grade Review: Open Wide (An Eerie Tale) (I.M. Eerie)

About This Book:

A boy’s worst fears about the dentist may prove true in this bone-chilling middle grade horror perfect for fans of Goosebumps and Christopher Pike.

Eddie has always been afraid of the dentist. He even bit the last one he went to (by accident). And Dr. Yankum, the eccentric new dentist in town, isn’t making matters any better. He pulled two of Eddie’s teeth—teeth Eddie swears were perfectly healthy. And he finds out he’s not the only kid in town who has had unnecessary extractions. Who or what is Dr. Yankum? And what does he want with their teeth?

When the doctor starts dating Eddie’s mom, Eddie knows it’s only a matter of time before her teeth go missing too! Eddie and his best friend, Darryl, band together and put their sleuthing skills to the test to uncover the truth about Dr. Yankum. But they’re not prepared for what they find…

Eddie is terrified of the dentist; he bit the last one that he went to, so now his mom has scheduled an appointment with the new dentist in town, Dr. Yankum. He took out two of Eddie’s teeth that he believed were just fine, and after visiting Dr. Yankum’s office, he has come to find that other children are missing teeth as well. Now Eddie’s mom is on a date with Dr. Yankum, and Eddie isn’t going to let him take her teeth too, so he partners with his best friend, Darryl, to find out just who this Dr. Yankum is.

What I Liked: This book begins with a note from the author before diving into the story. Each of the chapters in this book is short, which makes it a great option for a read-aloud. This book does a great job of building tension throughout this story and has you anticipating Eddie’s every move. It’s intriguing to find the story about Dr. Yankum unfold, and the description of him and his team makes the characters come alive. While the cover gives you a hint about what you are going to find in the pages of this story, the moment in which Dr. Yankum’s identity is revealed is exciting. Each moment after that is even more exciting as we need to see just how this story plays out.

The conclusion of this book will knock you right out of the seat that you were already sitting on the edge of. This portion of the story comes out of nowhere and was something that wasn’t easy to predict. It was fascinating to see how this twist plays out and then see what the Author has to say about this twist as well. While Dr. Yankum is supposed to be a villain in this story, this twisted ending has you wondering what happens next, and wanting more of him and his sidekicks, along with the place that they come from.

Final Verdict: Open Wide is an exhilarating story that captures your attention from page one and stays in your mind long after you finish the last page. This is perfect for children ages 8 and up who are looking for something spooky but not scary. Children who enjoy Goosebumps, Creepers, Are You Afraid of the Dark?, and Jasper Rabbit’s Creepy Tales will enjoy this book.
