Kid Review: The Shy Book By Howard Pearlstein

About This Book:

The Shy Book is a tender, empowering story that helps children find courage in their quiet moments and reminds them that even the softest voice has something important to say. A Junior Library Guild Gold Selection!
This book wants to be read―truly, it does―but there’s just one problem: It’s feeling a little shy. It worries the reader might think it’s silly . . . or worse, boring. So it suggests putting it back on the shelf―surely, there must be a better book out there.

But what if the reader doesn’t give up?

In The Shy Book, the story gently unfolds as the book finds the courage to speak, showing young readers that even when we feel uncertain or afraid, our voices still matter. Throughout the book’s journey, children discover that it’s OK to feel shy―and that those feelings don’t have to stop them from connecting, expressing themselves, or being seen.

Understanding big emotions like shyness, sadness, worry, or anger is no easy task, especially for little ones. That’s where the Emotions series steps in. With The Shy Book, The Worried Book, The Sad Book, and The Angry Book, children learn to recognize and name their emotions in a warm, relatable, and often humorous way.

Told from the perspective of books themselves, each story offers practical strategies for emotional regulation, helping kids build confidence and resilience as they navigate their inner worlds. Perfect for children ages 3–7, this charming series is a heartfelt tool for parents, caregivers, and educators who want to foster emotional literacy and spark important conversations―one page at a time.

Cute and Fun Way to Teach Kids About Overcoming Shyness

THE SHY BOOK is part of the new Emotions Series. Each book focuses on a book that feels a different emotion. This book feels shy. It wants to be read, but it worries that the reader might think poorly of it. That it’s boring or silly. But what happens if the reader doesn’t give up on the book and keeps flipping the pages?

This book manages to talk about shyness in a way that fits the age range of its intended readers. Children under the age of 7 might not always have the language to describe what they are feeling when they’re feeling shy. It describes the feeling and gives it a name. The book describes feeling worried and nervous and embarrassed. And it plainly states that it’s shy. This can allow children to connect the way they feel sometimes with a word to describe it to adults.

The book also manages to present a possible solution to its shyness. Asking questions about someone else. It might not work for everyone, but it seems to work for the book and gives children a starting point. Engaging other people in conversation that isn’t focused on yourself can help you feel less shy and withdrawn.

The illustrations in this book are simple, but cute. A lot of the pages seem to mainly be shades of blue and pops of yellow. There are other colors used, but the focus on yellow allows the Shy Book to pop out on the page. Even its text box is yellow most of the time.

THE SHY BOOK is a simple but empowering story, encouraging children to find bravery even in their shy moments. The simple illustrations are beautiful, but they allow the focus to remain on the Shy Book and the emotions.
