overall cute Valentine’s Day story
LOVE is a sweet board book, great for Valentine’s Day. The book features a cutout heart that forms part of the gifts shared between friends throughout. Bear is sharing gifts with all his friends to show them how much he cares, but at the end, he is sad because he doesn’t have any gifts – until his friends appear to return the gifts and share that he is their Valentine.
What I loved: This book has a great rhythm when read aloud with rhyming phrases on every page. The cutout adds some extra interest in the story, as the heart forms parts of the gifts that bear is sharing with his friends. Bear has chosen thoughtful gifts for all his friends, such as a yo-yo for frog since it also bounces. This has some heartwarming messages around gifting and how the ultimate gift is friendship.
The illustrations feature adorable animals and lots of bright colors that keep every page visually interesting. The cutout is clever and works with the images well. The text is large and easy to read, even in low light settings like bedtime.
What left me wanting more: While the end is relatable, the message of gifting seems like it should be without expectation, and this could be challenging for young readers with bear sad about not getting gifts. Also, having his gifts returned to him seems a bit off, even though the message is intended to be that they don’t need gifts because they have bear himself.
Final verdict: LOVE is an overall charming read with great rhyming text and a cool cut-out that young readers will enjoy.
