This is a story about a boy with so much energy, he struggles to contain it. He's bouncing off the walls--during school, at museums, while playing with friends. Everywhere he goes, he's moving, laughing, fidgeting, and climbing--and he always has something to say. In some places, he's supposed to be quiet and still, but that's HARD! What's a boy with so much energy to do?

Beautifully illustrated and written in rhyming verse, The Boy with Big, Big Energy explores how energetic, active kids can find healthy outlets. With the help of his patient dad, the boy learns how to focus his energy in the appropriate time and place by trying new sports and calm-down techniques. This story follows a boy who has so much energy that he can’t contain. He’s always moving, bouncing off walls, and always has something to say. Sometimes there are places where he has to remain still and quiet but that is way too hard for him to do. What is he supposed to do with all this energy?

What I Liked: This book is a lot of fun with the vibrant illustrations that bring the characters to life and have them bouncing off the pages. The illustrations do a fantastic job of showing the constant movement that the boy is in, and his struggles with containing his energy. The pacing of this story is great and helps to keep the reader’s attention as it goes along with the characters.

The book does a great job of highlighting healthy outlets for energy as the boy’s dad teaches him to redirect his energy into sports, and methods for calming down. The story also showcases how excessive energy, and the inability to remain quiet can be gifts, and how those gifts can help others. This book is great to show children that their energy isn’t always a problem and how that energy can be used as a strength rather than a weakness.

Final Verdict: The Boy with Big, Big Energy is perfect for children with ADHD, who can’t sit still, and who may have trouble staying quiet as they’ll enjoy seeing themselves reflected in this story and gaining coping skills for all that energy that is stored in them. This book is great to use in the classroom to teach children how differences can be useful in various settings, and how we can help each other with our differences. This book is also a great tool to teach children techniques for calming down and how to channel extra energy.
