DRAGONS AND OTHER CREATURES OF THE SKY is a delightful, interactive magical creature guessing game. The book gives a short rhyme about a magical creature that is partially hidden. When children turn the page, the image opens to reveal the creature.
What I loved: This is such a clever design that allows children to easily open and close the images as they play the guessing game. The images open and close with the turn of the page, so it requires very little effort and looks seriously cool! The illustrations themselves are full of color and magic, with fun peek-through portals that show the hidden creature and then the riddle when turned.
The questions/riddles were lots of fun and make this a cute guessing game. Though the animals are unusual (phoenixes, fairies, hippogriffs, and more), children will enjoy learning about these imaginary creatures. Backmatter includes a little more about each of the creatures shown.
The rhyming riddles/text are fantastic for little ears and roll off the tongue very smoothly. The pattern of the writing is also great for young readers who will appreciate the repeating “who am I?” questions as well as structure of the answer.
What left me wanting more: As a very small thing, the font is a little small and the backgrounds are very colorful, which can make reading these a bit tougher for aging eyes, especially in lowlight (bedtime) settings.
Final verdict: DRAGONS AND OTHER CREATURES OF THE SKY is a clever, interactive board book that will delight the youngest of fantasy readers!
