I just finished Al Capone Does My Shirts by Gennifer Choldenko. It was an interesting book based on what life was like for the children that lived on the Island of Alcatraz. Moose Flanagan, the main character, makes many choices, most of them to help his sister Natalie. Natalie has autism and no one knows how to help her, because in the 1930s (when the book takes place) people did not know a lot about autism. One of the themes of the story is sometimes you have to go out of your way for people you care about.

I give this book a rating of 4 out of 5. What I liked about this book is that Moose is always with Natalie. He is responsible for her and he cares about what happens to her so much that he is willing to risk his chances on Alcatraz and risk getting in the worst trouble of his life. If you want to know more about this book, check it out of your local library today!
