As someone who's always on the lookout for quality non-fiction for little ones, this book is a real winner! The photography is absolutely gorgeous - crisp, engaging images that immediately grab attention. My toddler squeals with delight at every page turn, pointing and naming the different dogs with pure joy.
What I appreciate most is how this book introduces factual information in an accessible way for very young children. The simple text paired with stunning visuals creates perfect opportunities for vocabulary building and categorization skills. We've used this book for sorting games (big dogs vs. small dogs, different colors, etc.) and it's become a go-to for quiet time activities.
From a developmental standpoint, animal books like this are fantastic for building empathy and understanding of the world beyond our immediate experience. My preschooler has started asking more thoughtful questions about pet care and animal needs since we added this to our library. The diverse range of dog breeds represented also opens up conversations about differences and similarities - always valuable lessons.
My only minor critique is that I would have loved to see a bit more information about dog care or behavior, but I understand this is aimed at very young readers. The sturdy construction is perfect for little hands, and the size is ideal for independent "reading." This has definitely inspired us to check out more books in the Animal Friends series. It's become a favorite for both independent exploring and interactive reading time, which makes it a solid investment for any family library.
