With all the gems back in the Belt, Lief, Barda and Jasmine need to find the true heir of Adin. They depend on the belt to guide them to the heir but it doesn't seem to be working that way. They get a member of each of the tribes that were involved in making the belt eons ago to try to awaken the Belt's powers and hopefully point them in the right direction. Through all this they have to deal with grippers (holes in the ground with sharp teeth), a member of their party becomes badly hurt and there are more tricks up the Shadow Lord's sleeve to try to through them off their quest. People who had been working with them are shown to actually be working against them. The ending is satisfying, if not a little obvious, and the book finishes off the series greatly.
