To be a gutsy girl, you must be courageous, brave, determined, positive, and strong. You must try your best and take care of yourself to survive. Gutsy Girls: Young Women Who Dare is a great inspirational/biographical/health book for young women. Gutsy Girls will help you learn about great young women who have accomplished some of their goals and taken risks and lived to tell the tale. Some of the writings are about sportswomen like Kelly Matthews, an inline skater, Veronica Kay, a surfer, and Tara Hamilton, a wakeboarder. There are hands-on discovery girls such as Hannah Thomas, an Antarctic researcher, Diana Silbergeld, a world traveler, and Sarah Jacobsen, fossil hunter. Along with other topics, read about girls who help us: Carmella House, in the navy and Melissa Marshall, who helps Habitat International. Gutsy Girls also provides you with reading material/Web suggestions, timelines of great women and their accomplishments, and guidance on how to be a gutsy girl, mentally and physically.

Gutsy Girls is an excellent selection for girls who need inspiration, help, reading for school, or information about famous young women for a report or research. I really enjoyed reading about Susie Maroney who swam from Cuba to Florida and from Mexico to Cuba (excuse me if these routes are incorrect). I have read about her in past years and somewhat forgot about her. I also enjoyed reading the stories about the cycling, mountain climbing, and vaulting adventurers. These girls really have strength and guts! I suggest this book for girls ages 12 and up and give it 5 stars for plenty of inspiration and motivation! If you like Gutsy Girls I suggest Cool Women, Hot Jobs (by the same authors), Cool Women (I can't remember the author, but I have reviewed it here!), Girls Who Rocked the World by Amelie Welden, and Winning Ways by Sue Macy!
