MEET CARLY AND CARTOKA! is an early reader featuring the PJ Masks as they meet some new villains, Carly and Cartoka. Carly and Cartoka are taking car parts around town. When the PJ Masks see it, they suit up and soon meet Carly and Cartoka in their flash car. Carly and Cartoka begin stealing all the PJ Masks’ cars! Although Gecko and Owlette suggest they work as a team, Catboy zooms off after them alone, going into Zoomzania. He gets out and then they call upon their animals to save the day.
What I loved: Fans of the PJ Masks will enjoy this new adventure where the PJ Masks must work together to save the day. The theme of teamwork is present in this one as in many of their other stories and is always a good message. The images from the show will pull the reader in with the expressive characters and great use of detail and color. The font is also large and clear, printed on white background to aid in early reading/word recognition.
What left me wanting more: Some of the words in the book are unusual and a bit large, which can be tough for early readers, such as gigantogarage and zoomzania. There is also not resolution to the stolen vehicles as the story ends rather abruptly – they get their animals to ride and then Carly and Cartoka say it is not fair that they don’t have wheels and drive off. It almost felt like there were parts of the story missing.
Final verdict: MEET CARLY AND CARTOKA! is an early reader that will work pretty well for fans of the PJ Masks.
