Milo and Twig begins when Twig meets a boy named Milo who finds him when his wing is broken. Twig grows stronger and Milo has to make a tough decision about what is next and how to best help his new friend.

What I Liked: This book is told through the perspective of Twig, who is a bird that got hurt and is being helped by a new friend, Milo. Each page contains a few words with beautiful, lively illustrations that help place us into the story. The story does a great job of highlighting the feelings that birds might go through when humans are trying to help them and then keeping them as pets.

The illustrations do a great job of helping set the mood for the story as the colors shift from muted tones to vibrant colors. This shift occurs several times in the story from when Twig is found to when he is kept caged and hoping to be back in the sky. The illustrations do a fantastic job of highlighting the bond that forms between Milo and Twig and how that bond helps Milo understand what Twig needs in the end.

Final Verdict: Milo and Twig is a gentle and sweet story about letting go and the joy in helping others. Children ages 3 and up will delight in seeing how Milo comes to the decision of how to best help his new friend and how cheerful Twig is when he gets to be himself. This is a great book to show children how helping others helps us and the benefits that helping others has for our lives.
