I Survived the Sinking of the Titanic, 1912 is a thrilling historical adventure, perfect for young readers.
My son is a huge fan of the I Survived books, so I knew we’d have to add this special edition to our shelves!

Lauren Tarshis masterfully weaves together a tale of young George, a courageous 10-year-old boy who finds himself aboard the ill-fated RMS Titanic. She balances historical accuracy with an engaging story, making this book both educational and entertaining.
This book isn’t very long, minus the special edition photos, we are looking at around 100 pages. The text is a fairly large size, making a suitable chapter book for upper elementary or middle grade level readers! The language is straightforward and age-appropriate, with an added glossary at the end
to help readers better understand unfamiliar terms they may come across.
At times, it felt like the story rushed through certain events. I would have appreciated a bit more depth in exploring the aftermath of the sinking.

The grey-scale images throughout the story are expressive and a fantastic addition to the story. You can clearly see the emotion drawn on each represented characters’ face.
There are an additional 80 pages, some with full color images, some with startling facts about the Titanic and her passengers, as well as efforts to locate the ship pieces and artifacts. These extra bits of history help add to the emotion and gravity of the story itself.

I think the I Survived series is a creative way to engage young children into learning about historical tragedies, The Sinking of the Titanic being just one of them.
