Most Valuable Player can be read anytime of the year, but Woody's attention to detail in its Fall setting makes it perfect for an Autumnal read. The story and descriptions immerse the reader in the season of change. The novel follows two very different teen boys who share one thing in common (on the surface) football. Through their tutoring sessions, a new understanding blooms between the two that shakes their relationship. Will they be able to overcome their pasts in order to find happiness?

This is the second Woody novel that I read and I love their writing style that creates realistic characters that the reader can connect to. Though Most Valuable Player has a lot of lighthearted moments, it does feel a bit heavier compared to their previous release, Exes and Foes, due to the topics discussed. I would go into the story with caution for readers may be triggering for mentions of abuse (emotional and physical) and bullying. But the topics are handled with great care. We see Cameron and Mason work together to realize they are not alone and become a safe space for each other to heal.

I loved the quieter, tender moments of romance in this novel that were heartwarming to read. The progression of Cameron and Mason's relationship feels natural and not rushed. what I enjoyed most about this novel is that it's more than a romance story, it has a larger message of empathy and compassion. It reminds us to be kind to ourselves and others.

This is a touching story that will make you smile, laugh, and cry through its narrative. Woody has crafted another memorable YA novel that is sure to stick with you after the story ends. Recommending this novel for those who enjoy a sweet romance, coming-of-age themes, and heartfelt stories.
