Nordlys: Book One

Nordlys is a graphic novel translated from Norwegian. Sonja will be confirmed soon when a mysterious boy enters her room and offers to take her to his home. Sonja decides to follow Espen to a world that is different from the one that she knows. This world is full of trolls, magical creatures, and more. Sonja is finding her place in this new land and growing accustomed to it, and she might have just found something that bridges the gap between her old world and this new one.

What I Liked: This book opens by introducing you to Sonja as she is out enjoying her time with her horse before her confirmation ceremony. Sonja isn’t too thrilled with her current life and wishes to go where her uncle has been, but he refuses to let her come along. Fortunately for Sonja, Espen shows up in her room that night and whisks her away to a new world that is something from your dreams in which trolls, pirates, and magic exist. This book is hard to put down from the minute that you get transported into Espen’s world until the last page, even then, you don’t want to put it down, you just want to get your hands on book two to know how everything plays out.

The illustrations throughout this book transport you into a magical world in which magical beings come to life. These illustrations make it easy to follow along with the story and add an immense amount of fantasy to it. The illustrations ensure that you are enjoying the book and feel as if you are watching a movie as everything plays out.

Final Verdict: Nordlys is a magical graphic novel that transports you into another world and leaves you on the edge of your seat waiting for book two. Fans of Frozen or Brother Bear will enjoy this story as the magical world feels like the world you are in Frozen, and the magical creatures give off Brother Bear vibes.
