Bailey Weggins is a journalist, covering crime for Gloss, a New York Magazine, when everything seems to spiral downhill, starting with the loss of her job. This story follows her life as she tries to keep her work at work, and her personal life at home. Kate White, who is also the editor and chief of Cosmopolitan magazine, understands the journalism world and puts you in Baileys shoes and really makes you feel like you are living your everyday life as a journalist in glamorous New York City.
Bailey seems so real that you almost feel disheartened when she loses her job. Its hard to believe how much her occupation affects her life at home. All of the excitement starts when Bailey joins her fellow writer and friend Robby for dinner. He suggests she get a job working at Buzz magazine along with him. The only problem is the Editor, Mona Hodges. Is she really as bad to work for as people say? Bailey asks Robby. Well she can come on strong, if she doesnt like what she sees. I heard her verbally ***** slap the poor mail guy the other day because hed left a package in the wrong place, Robby replies after some consideration. Bailey doesnt realize how truthful Robby is being until she accepts the offer for an interview. Who knew that Robbys invitation to work for Buzz would lead her to hiding under cars, begging for help?
Suddenly Baileys daily routine of waking up, going to work, and coming home to hang out with friends is a thing of the past. When she becomes a celebrity crime writer for Buzz Magazine, she doubts her likelihood of good stories. Ironically it seems like her first story lands on her doorstep. While she is doing a friend a favor one night, she walks into the office to find the bloodied cleaning lady Katya, and Mona, unconscious and beaten on the head. After Mona dies in the hospital several hours later, Bailey is left with only one lead, Katya. The only thing she could remember was, I start to go into the office. I saw her-the editor, Ms. Hodges-on the floor. I start to go to her, to see if I can help. Then someone hit me. At this point all boundaries between work and home become non-existent. As Bailey covers the story for Buzz she becomes part of the story! The book follows Bailey as she risks her job, her friends, and her life to find out the truth. Does Bailey solve the murder, or become another victim?
I think that the book Over her Dead Body deserves five stars. I think that Kate White really captured the life of a journalist in New York City and made the story seem practical and not just a crazy non-realistic mystery. Bailey is probably the most animated and straight forward narrator in any of the books Ive ever written. I wish that there were a sequel or another Bailey Weggins book! I think this book is aimed for women ages 14 and up. It is a mix of those lovable gossipy girl books along with a great mystery story. Being an aspiring journalist, this book almost wants to make me stay out of crime reporting. I hope you get a chance to read it as well, its truly worth it!
