Unlikely many other Montgomery heroines (i.e. Anne and Emily), Pat Gardiner is not extraordinary or talented. She's just the youngest child at Silver Bush, her family's farm on Prince Edward Island, and a home she loves passionately, even at the age of 7. The book chronicles Pat's growing up years, from the arrival of a baby sister, the marriage of a beloved aunt, the coming of a best friend and neighbor, and the heartbreak of leaving her home, even for small visits. Between the blissful moments (usual spent with good friends Jingle and Bets) and the tragedies (including a death), there is always Judy Plum, the eccentric and loving Scottish housekeeper who is really a second mother to Pat and her siblings.

This is an old-fashioned, innocent and yet timeless coming of age story of a simple Canadian girl in the 1920s. Pat is an enjoyable heroine to spend some time with.
