Promise of the Wolves is a book that fans of Watership Down or the Warriors series would enjoy, because its told from the perspective of a wolf.
Kaala wasn't really supposed to live, since she's a half-blood. Just before the pack leader, Ruuqo is about to end her, the feared Greatwolves urge she be spared because of the moon shaped patch of fur on her chest, which they think is signifigant. She's now without any family with her mother banished and her siblings dead. Making friends with two other pups from Ruuqo's and Rissa's (his mate) litter, Ãzzuen and Marra.
The wolves of the Valley have three rules, and all are about to be broken. Wolves are not to let half-bloods live, not allowed to attack humans in the area, and cannot interfere with the humans. When Kaala feels a mysterious force drawing her to the humans, especially when a young girl is drowning in the water. When Kaala saves the girl, the two are instantly friends, and soon her friends join her in meeting with humans: hunting and playing with them.
But there is conflict between other packs and the humans, and the Stone Peak pack is preparing to strike. Ruuqo doesn't believe Kaala when she tells him that this is wrong, and soon most of the Valley is involved. If there's a fight, many (or all) will die. Kaala has to find strength and use her wits to save human- and wolfkind.
This wasn't my favorite book in the world, but it was enjoyable. I think that the insight in the view of a wolf was interesting, especially when they referred to humans. It also gives the reader an insight on what we're like to the rest of the world. Reccomended to animal-fantasy lovers.
