Almost all novels of girls "making it" in a traditional male field involve their intelligence and finesse. While that can be nice, Tamora Pierce portrays a heroine who makes it because she works hard.
Despite constant hazing, prejudice, even cruelty from the other pages, teachers, and, well, everyone in the castle, Kel is determined to stick it out and become a knight. Her hard-working, loyal, uncomplaining honesty and her selfless defense of the helpless gradually win over her enemies in this cute quartet.
Funny, inspiring, and a simple "good read," I highly recommend these and Tamora Pierce's other books.
