Serendipity can and does do it all; she’s class president, leads in the upcoming school play, and is the star of her school’s basketball team. In addition to all of this, she has the best luck and wins everything, like random radio raffles. This is how she encounters ZamZam, something at the town carnival that she accidentally knocks over and gets cursed with bad luck. Suddenly, Serendipity has no good luck; she keeps missing shots, can’t remember her lines, and messes up in the election, and on top of this, she can’t get her hair to cooperate with her. Serendipity is convinced that she is cursed and will do anything to reverse it all.

What I Liked: This book does a fantastic job of introducing you to Serendipity and all of her activities and luck before showing you the drastic change that occurs after the carnival incident. You get to see how drastically things change for her and how this change impacts her daily life. You also get a chance to see how the bad luck impacts her emotions and the things she says and does because of that.

The illustrations throughout this book are in shades of pink, which match Serendipity’s personality quite well. She has a bubbly and approachable personality throughout the book, and even when she is going through a rough time and hurts her friends, she manages to repair those things by reflecting on what she has done.

Final Verdict: Serendipity is a great graphic novel for children ages 8 and up who want to do it all and have a hard time letting go and letting others step in. This book is perfect for teaching children that taking a step back isn’t always bad and sometimes it can be helpful for others. Children who are fans of Mixed Up and Diary of a Wimpy Kid will find this book hilarious and fun.
