In this novel, it takes a great insiders look at the life of two Chinese women. It goes through the struggles of what happened to them as they grew up in an inferior world, working their way through life while trying to live it the way that they would like to.

Amazing and heart stopping, this book is one you cannot place down once you start. You will find yourself feeling for the characters as though they are real, though this is a work of pure fiction. Amazing.

Beautifully written story about two young girls from China who share their lives together by becoming pledged sisters. They share their secrets, emotions and thoughts with us as they experience the traditions of their culture: foot-bounding, arranged marriages & childbirth.

Absolutely loved the book! Students who want to explore the ancient traditions and the not-so ancient traditions of China would enjoy reading this book. Makes you truly appreciate being a 21st century woman.

This has to be my favorite book of all time. I absolutly love it! It made me cry (which is saying a lot becasue it is the only book that has), but yet it was very happy and good. This is the story of two young girls in 19th century China. As they write to each other, you learn of their inseprable bond, their worries about arranged marrages, the "mother love" of their bound feet, become what society expects of them, and, above all, love. This book is a tresure that every woman (and her daughter) should read.
