The heroine of the story is Rayna Powell, a young woman who suddenly find herself in the dangerous world of Taren. Rayna is no wimp who goes around screaming a lot asking for help. Shes intelligent, independent, stubborn, and has an opinion of her own. However, the author also gave her a sensitive side, which adds a layer of realism. Rayna is joined by Princess Keris, who is equally as independent. Keris is definitely not your stereotypical princess. Hint: she carries around a curved blade and is not afraid to use it. The villains and monsters in the book are amazing. They are scary, well written, and you really get an eerie feeling when they are being described. The story really gets exciting when Rayna and Keris join forces to do battle against the evil king of Taren, Nephredom and his evil army of sorcerers. The magic is great and believable and the ending is something you would never guess! This is a wonderful first book in the series. Highly recommended.
