There is so much to say about The Bees: A novel. It is not a remake of " A Bug's Life". This novel reached by hands at the perfect time. I had just finished reading a few articles about bees and how their habitats are in danger. I also was looking for a change in genres - something a little different. I found everything I was looking for in this novel!

The publisher describes this as a cross between Hunger Games and Handmaid's Tale. While I see the reason behind the comparison, The Bees, stands out on it's own.

The story is told through the point of view of Flora 717. In her hive, bees are born everyday. They are born to clean, born to serve, born to obey. But Flora isn't your typical "worker bee". She's born different and in her world different can be dangerous.

Laline Paull offers a detailed portrait of hive life. It is evident that research was done and it beautifully narrates the harsh realities of the natural world and the bee habitiats. At times the bees are very humanized, which I feel allows the reader to relate more to Flora 717.

The Bees: A novel is a great science-fiction/ fantasy novel with a touch of dystopian weaved through. It is a great blend of nature and fantasy. A modern day fairy tale for teens and adults.
