The Breadwinner  by Deborah Ellis is a great book about a girl named Parvana tries to make all of the money for her family in Afghanistan because her dad was taken to jail by the Taliban because he had owned books. Parvana can only make money and work in town if she dresses up as a boy because boys are treated better in the Middle East. One day Parvana was on a street when a Taliban member walks up to her and reaches into his coat pocket and gives her a note and it says that the soldier lost his wife and always cries about it. Then, Parvana realized that even Taliban soldiers have love in there heart and that she should still worry about her dad and care for everybody. Then, she and a girl from school named Shauzia made a business where they would sell cigarettes and gum. That business does very well.
This story takes place in Kabul, Afghanistan and some important characters are Parvana, Shauzia, Maryam, Ali, Nooria, Malali, Mother, and Father. Maryam, Ali, Nooria, and Malali are all Parvana's brothers and sisters. I think the author did a great job of telling who was talking and I never got lost on who was talking. I think the only thing that Deborah Ellis could have done better on discription of the people. I wouldn't  know what Parvana looks like if I didn't look at the cover. I think that kids 10+ should read this book because it is very emotional and tough on the family. Overall i give this book 10 out of 5 stars. It is the best book i have ever read in my life!!!
