Mama always tells me stories on my birthday.
She tells me the story of how I arrived in this world.
They say I first came to them in a quiet dream
and that I was a gift from our ancestors.
For one Armenian child, birthdays are days for decorating the house with bunches of rose and mint and sumac, for eating beef dumplings with garlic yogurt, and for baking cakes with family and friends. But birthdays are also a time for telling stories―stories of ancestors and homelands, of births and new beginnings, and of the land their family now calls home. Because stories make up who we are; they are like rivers that lead into oceans, like seeds that fall from flowers, like pages of this book that come from trees. And the more stories that are told, the brighter this little child shines.

For one little girl, her birthday is more than just food, desserts and presents. She celebrates it by listening to her mom tell stories about her ancestors, learning about where she came from. The more she learns about her ancestors, the brighter she can shine because she feels their light surrounding her. She celebrates them along with her birth because she wouldn't be where she was if it wasn't for them.

THE BRIGHTER I SHINE is a rich and heartwarming story about the importance of learning about your heritage. This little girl is inspiring and this story may encourage other children to inquire about their ancestors too. Hearing stories about your background as more substance to a birthday and reminds children of the reasons to celebrate. The author also leaves an endearing note in the back of the book to tell us a little more about what inspired this book. The illustrations are stunning with their attention to detail and mash of colors.

Final Verdict: This book would make an ideal birthday gift to children aged four and older to open the opportunity to teach them about their family history.
