Growing up among his mother's people, young Theseus has never been completely certain of who his father was- he likes to hold with the common gossip that he is a son of Poseidon. Though signs of the god's favor show- as a boy, Theseus senses that an earthquake is going to occur before it does- he is nevertheless unsure of himself due to his small stature. Henceforth, when he learns the identity of his father at the age of eighteen he sets off to Athens on foot.

I put this book on hold at the library on the recommendation of a friend, but I was not quite sure what to expect other than that it was a good book. Still, I looked forward to reading it. When it came in at the library I was surprised to see just how decrepit it was- leatherbound, pages yellowed, and published in July of 1958, for heaven's sake- that makes it older than my father and I assure you I felt very scholarly as I sat down to read it.

It was, to my great surprise, a very good book.
