The Queen of the Western Isle has died, leaving the throne in contention as Princess Isolde is wed to King Mark of Cornwall. Isolde, by the Mother-right, is Queen. Isolde departs Cornwall at once, though this also means leaving her lover, Tristan, at the mercy of her greatest rival for his heart- Blanche, the beautiful princess of France, the maid of the white hands.
I have been working my way through this series for, oh, a year and a half now, and am finding each book unique. The Maid of the White Hands, for example, is a beautiful book that makes many very valid points about the nature of love. You miss a lot of this book if you just read it without thinking about it, and I like that.
Another great thing about this book is that, by this point in the series, the characters' hormones have quieted down a bit.
