The Steps, by Rachel Cohn is a great book about how twelve-year-old Annabel has such a complex family she has to get used to. Her parents, Angelina and Jack, who were never married, separated and started their own families. When Annabel first goes to visit her dad and his new family in Melbourne, Australia, she promises to never like her "steps" (step-siblings), Lucy and Angus, and feels that she isn't welcome there. But she soons learn differently and slowly learns to accept her new family members on a "trip" with Lucy.

This is a cute and touching story about step-parents and siblings and how you can't do anything to get rid of them, but have to learn to make the best of the situation and love them. When I first read this, I didn't know it was for "young readers". So it wasn't as "young adult" like as I thought. But Annabel is a funny, feisty twelve-year-old that you'll grow to like.
