With collage-style illustrations, WONDERFALL takes readers on a trip through the season of autumn with its focus on an oak tree—and some squirrels who hang out nearby. Each page spread has the tree and a poem (and the squirrels) and focuses on some aspect of the season with a play on words: “Peacefall” starts us off with a gentle breeze causing acorns to fall, and “Dutifall” shows the school bus returning as kids scurry off to school (while squirrels scurry after those acorns). “Frightfall” brings us Halloween and its ghosts and goblins, and “Wistfall” has us saying goodbye to the geese as they head south to avoid the cold weather that is coming.
The back pages of WONDERFALL give more detailed science lessons on the animals that have appeared in the book, the oak tree, and the squirrels and acorns that have been featured in the book.
The illustrations in WONDERFALL are great, the poems are gentle and have plenty of alliteration to make them fun to read, and the facts provided give the book the extra oomph that make it perfect for the classroom as well as home.
I loved this book, and I’ll definitely be adding it to my preschool aged granddaughters’ library.
My thanks to the publisher and YA Books Central for a copy of the book galley in exchange for my honest review.
