An evocative nonfiction narrative follows the swifts on their epic journey north, from the jungles of Africa to nesting sites in Europe.

A swift may not look like anything special—it’s just a plain brown bird, small enough to nestle in the palm of your hand—but these superheroes of the avian world can fly incredible distances amazingly quickly, reaching speeds of up to seventy miles per hour and spending ten months of every year in the air. Follow one female swift from the steamy forests of tropical central Africa to northern Europe as she navigates arid desert and restless ocean, dodging predators along the way. Eating, drinking, and sleeping on the wind, she won’t rest until she’s reached her nesting site. Woven through with fascinating facts amplified in an author’s note and index, Super Swifts fuses gorgeous collage illustrations and a lilting text to evoke the grandeur of a voyage like no other—and introduce a singular bird with amazing powers.

Super Swifts gives fascinating facts about the Swift who migrates from Africa to Europe without ever having to land. The style of writing was perfect for fans of David Attenborough nature documentaries and I heard his voice in my head through the entire book. There are additional facts about the landscapes the swift passes through on its migration journey that add to the fascinating facts presented. I did not know much about the swifts before reading this book and it fulfilled my wonderment and curiosity about these interesting little birds after reading about them. It is easy to understand but also thorough in the information provided making it a great addition to an elementary reader's choice for nonfiction. The illustrations were well done making a great complement to the text.

Travel around the world with the swifts, a small, unassuming bird that goes on an amazing journey every year. Ocean to mountain, desert to suburban neighborhood, the swifts weather sunshine, rain, and sneaky predators, but the little creatures amazingly endure it all.

Balancing information with whimsy, this is a wonderful educational book. There's the main story, told in bigger text, which is great for more casual readers, and then the additional captions with more of the detailed facts. Some people just want the big picture, while others will delight in the flight speeds and distances, and there's plenty in this book to please both groups.

The full color illustrations are beautifully vibrant. For an entire book all about swifts, each page remains fresh and different, with a range of colors across all the places the swifts go.

Pick this up to learn a little, or a lot, about the super swifts.
