DRAGON POST is a kid’s picture book following young Alex after he finds a dragon in his house. Told in part through letters, the story follows him as he tries to figure out what to do with this new creature living in his home.
This is a charming little read. A relatively short book, even for a picture book, but with a sweet story. Dragons can be hard to care for and the situations Alex finds himself in are lighthearted and fun. It’s also sweet to see Alex and the dragon grow closer. The ending can be a little bittersweet for younger readers, but it is handled with a lot of grace.
The book comes with 5 letters that can be pulled out of their envelopes and read. Younger readers may struggle with pulling the letters out and putting them back, but the letters are definitely worth reading. From a butcher to a friend, the letters come from some of the many people that Alex contacts about his new friend.
Cute and clean illustrations make this book a joy to read. There are colors everywhere, the dragon is even a gorgeous red/orange color that lets it stand out on the pages. The colors are also dimmed in a couple of scenes that are a bit more “serious”. The art perfectly reflects the tone of the story, capturing both the whimsy and chaos that owning a dragon can bring.
Another compliment to this book is the writing, especially in the letters. Each letter uses a different style of handwriting, managing to add personality to the authors even though we never actually meet the people who write the letters. It was a small but amazing detail that added life to the story.
Sweet and fun with an unexpected bit of emotion at the end, DRAGON POST is an engaging story. Urgent letters can be pulled out and read, adding a sense of depth and humor to this story as Alex communicates with others to keep the dragon safe and happy.
