Nani and The Lion

Nani loves drumming and when she drums the villagers can’t help but dance. But the villagers are always warning Nani about the lion that she is not to wake. The lion, king of the land, has outlawed all noise but Nani can’t help but drum. One day the Lion notices the sound of drumming and goes into the village where the villagers cower in fear but Nani keeps drumming, standing up to the bully. Will Nani be able to defeat the Lion or will her village be forced to live in fear forever?

What I Liked: This book opens by introducing you to Nani and her drum. The beginning of this story is full of joy and wonder before the tone shifts as villagers inform Nani of the lion. Each time the lion is mentioned the colors and tone shift in the story to one of fear. This shift allows you to understand the severity of the lion being introduced and be immersed in the fear that this village has of him.

The textured illustrations do a great job of setting the scene and showcasing the various people and places in Nani’s village. Each page shows you different scenes and takes you through various moments in which Nani is drumming and in which she takes on the Lion. It’s fascinating to see how Nani stands up to the lion and the methods that she uses to defeat him and ensure safety for her village.

Final Verdict: Nani and the Lion is a beautiful, engaging story that teaches children about standing up to bullies and using music to express joy. Children ages 4 and up will delight hearing this fun story that highlights song and dance, and shows how to use your voice.
