Game On! (Mermicorno: Starfall)

Astra, Gwen, Squishella, Kameko, and Nautique go on a fun adventure to save Pearl Kingdom and to thwart Ika Inkblot’s plan in the first Mermicorno graphic novel. This adventure takes them to a sunken ship in which they find Bottom Feeder Bandits, who challenge them to various games and this is the only way that they’ll be able to escape. Will the Mermicornos make it out of this ship?

What I Liked: This book is a fun story that is told by one of the Mermicornos and does a great job of capturing your attention from the start. The story does a great job of briefly giving you a back story of how Kameko joined the group without having to go too far into the back. There are portions in the story that are broken off from the main story such as Kameko’s lesson about baseball or when another Mermicono is revisiting lessons she learned in the past. These parts of the book are woven seamlessly into the story and don’t detract from the rest of the book.

The illustrations throughout this book are vibrant, and colorful, doing a great job of telling the story along with the text. Many of the emotions throughout this book are told through the illustrations and there are some pieces that are depicted through images rather than using words. The pacing of the book is great for younger readers as they will be able to get through the story quickly, especially if they are familiar with these characters.

Final Verdict: Mermicorno: Game On! Is a great introduction to graphic novels for younger readers who are fans of My Little Pony or the Mermicorno show. Children ages 5 and up will enjoy revisiting their favorite characters and going on additional adventures with them.
