The Wide, Wide Sea takes a young child on a journey when they make a special connection with a seal while on a trip to the seaside. We get the chance to explore everything on the beach and within the sea until a storm suddenly blows in. The child wakes up to find the beach is covered in litter and wonders whose fault it is and who can fix it. Her grandmother teaches her that together with the community they can help clean the beach and the child promises the seal that things are going to change for the better.

What I Liked: This book opens with a trip that a child is taking with her grandmother out to the beach, while she is there she encounters a seal and the grandmother explains to her that they are in his home. The child forms a strong connection with this seal and through her imagination, we get a glimpse of what it would be like to explore the ocean as a seal.

The illustrations in this book perfectly capture the vastness and beauty of the ocean. The soft, flowing colors mirror the water’s movement which creates a sense of calm and immersion. The few delicate lines that do appear emphasize important details in the illustrations making them come alive. The artwork takes you beneath the waves at times, making you feel as if you too are swimming alongside the seal.

This book carries an important environmental message highlighting the harm that humans have caused to the ocean with pollution and waste. While this is highlighted this book also shows can people can take action to protect and restore marine ecosystems. The story gently introduces these themes in a way that is accessible to young readers and allows them to think about their role in caring for the planet.

Final Verdict: The Wide, Wide Sea is a beautifully illustrated and meaningful book that is perfect for children ages 4 and up. This book introduces young readers to the wonders of the ocean while also teaching them about the importance of protecting marine life. Children will be inspired to appreciate the beauty of nature and take small steps to help preserve it for future generations. Adults can use this book as a reminder to themselves to ensure that they are preserving nature for future generations.
