About This Book:

From New York Times bestselling creators, Joanna Ho and Amber Ren, comes a sweet, bubbly tale about a young boba tea who learns that being you is being enough!
Milk Tea Town was steeped in tradition. That is, until… Mindy came along.
Mindy isn’t like the other classic milk tea flavors, with their sensible straws and varying shades of brown. Instead, Mindy shines with her green, white and red colors. Worried about not being milk tea enough, Mindy decides to dive into their history so she can be less different. As she and her friends embark on this journey, they make a surprising discovery about the truth behind milk tea that could change the town forever…

A charming and delightful story about self love and being true to who you are, with a subtle, underlying message about the Asian-American identity and immigrant experience — what does it mean to be Asian enough?

Steeped in Tradition

Becoming Boba is a vibrant story about accepting ones as who they are, as well as a fun history lesson about milk tea!

The author introduces readers to Milk Tea Town, a quaint little town featuring different types of milk teas and their decidedly brown in color selves. That is, until Mindy and her friends come along. These little milk teas are different! They are colorful, have a variety of toppings, and may not actually be milk tea at all.
With Mindy and friends diving into the history of milk tea, readers learn a nice introductory amount of information on how milk tea became and eventually evolved. Readers learn even more with the fun little tidbits in the back matter. The pun are fun, even if they go over young readers heads.

I love the illustrations. The different milk teas and boba are adorable, with their vibrant colors, different toppings, and personalities.

Becoming Boba is a sweet picture book offering readers a new way to explore what it means to be enough.
