Guinea pigs Pog and Pickle have spent their entire lives together in the same hutch. Pog is eager to get out and explore the world, but Pickle is scared. What if they get injured or lost out there? But Pog will not be dissuaded, and when the humans pack up for a trip to Peru, she takes her chance to sneak into their luggage and fly away. What can a lovelorn Pickle do but hop buses and planes and trucks to go after her? With a rhythmic, bouncy text and comical illustrations, Ross Montgomery and Sarah Warburton lead a wild journey that shows what wonders—including new friends and a playful capybara—may be found on the other side of fear.

Pog and Pickle’s Great Escape by Ross Montgomery is a hilarious picture book that follows two pet guinea pigs on an unexpected adventure to Peru.
Pog and Pickles have only known life in their cozy hutch behind bars. While Pog wonders what lies beyond their bars, Pickle is much more timid, worrying about all the what-ifs of the outside world. When the family they live with packs up for a two-week vacation to Peru, Pog decides to take the leap and stows away in the luggage. Pickle does not want to be left behind and bravely follows after her. Together, they embark on a wild trek to Peru, where they meet countless other guinea pigs and enjoy the adventure of a lifetime. The book wraps up with a happy ending and a genuinely fun twist!
What I liked: You don’t often see guinea pigs as the main characters in a book, so the story felt unique and immediately captured my attention. Sarah Warburton’s illustrations are vibrant and so detailed. I love looking at the pictures of all the guinea pigs and noticing new details each time I read it. The book is told in bouncy rhyming prose that makes this fun to read-aloud. Beneath the comedy, there is a wonderful lesson about how stepping out of your comfort zone can lead to the most beautiful, life-changing experiences.
I highly recommend Pog and Pickle’s Peru Adventure for anyone who loves humorous picture books.
