And now it’s time for our regularly scheduled broadcast…er…cover reveal!

Today we’re revealing Sarah Fine’s OF METAL AND WISHES, available August 2014 from McElderry/Simon & Schuster. Before we get to the goods, here’s a message from Sarah:

Hi YABC readers!

My name is Sarah Fine, and I’m the author of OF METAL AND WISHES. I’m incredibly excited to share the cover with you today! The original title for this book was Factory Ghost, a pretty literal statement—the setting of the story is a turn-of-the-20th-century meat factory in a fictional society. My editor Ruta Rimas wisely guided me toward a title that captured the essence of the story instead, and that was only the first in a long chain of amazing decisions by the team at McElderry/S&S. Michael Frost did the photography, and the cover was designed by Debra Sfetsios-Conover. I’m so grateful for the thought and work they put into it, and I’m certainly glad they were in charge. They made it exquisite in a way I could never have pictured (possibly because I am a most un-visual person). I could use a lot of words to describe this cover, but I think it would be best if I shut up and let you look at it for yourselves.

~ Sarah

About the Book

There are whispers of a ghost in the slaughterhouse where sixteen-year-old Wen assists her father in his medical clinic—a ghost who grants wishes to those who need them most. When one of the Noor, men hired as cheap factory labor, humiliates Wen, she makes an impulsive wish of her own, and the Ghost grants it.

Brutally.

Guilt-ridden, Wen befriends the Noor, including their outspoken leader, a young man named Melik. At the same time, she is lured by the mystery of the Ghost and learns he has been watching her … for a very long time.

As deadly accidents fuel tensions within the factory, Wen must confront her growing feelings for Melik, who is enraged at the sadistic factory bosses and the prejudice faced by his people at the hand of Wen’s, and her need to appease the Ghost, who is determined to protect her against any threat—real or imagined. She must decide whom she can trust, because as her heart is torn between tradition and love, the factory is exploding around her … and she might go down with it.

Our Thoughts

Wow. This cover! So understated and elegant, yet also mysterious and haunting.

And the synopsis? Double wow. This one just moved to the top of my to-read list for 2014. A whole year of waiting will be agony, I tell you.

Okay. Is it normal to have stared at this cover a hundred times on Goodreads, and still squeal again to see it here? It’s official. My YA reading slump has ended. I need this in my life.

  9. Karyn says:

The cover is really pretty. Love the way she is partially veiled by the curtain. An essence of beauty and mystery.

  10. Love the cover–very ethereal!

  11. Jessica Harrington says:

I always like covers with girls on it, it is usually the main character and lets me get in to the book more if I can see what the character looks like. The cover makes me curious about the book. Nice job with the cover, very cool.

  12. Lisa D says:

The cover model is absolutely gorgeous. I like the light colored outfit that she’s wearing and the light color of the thin veil… it’s almost as if this simple photo is foreshadowing…

I love it. It definitely stands out in my opinion.

  13. Rachel Spring says:

I like it! It’s very intriguing and mysterious!

  14. Erica says:

Very cool cover. I like that you can only see part of her face, including only one of her eyes. It really draws you in and makes you want to read it.
The only thing I would change is moving the title over just a little bit so that the “m” is partly off the translucent curtain. As it is now, the words “of” and “metal” seem a little disconnected. I like how the “w” is slightly off the curtain; I would’ve made it slightly more so. But that’s just me being nit-picky.
