Secure your bib, open wide, and get ready to unpack the properties of matter. Chemistry is all around us—starting with Baby’s high chair . . .

Are you hungry? . . .
Let’s experiment.

Why wait for college when you can teach your toddler advanced science right now? After sterilizing your workstation, prepare to explore solids, which can be combined with liquids to form an optimal mixture. Now test your mixture. Eureka! Isn’t feeding time a total . . . gas? In a bright, graphic board book loaded with dry humor and comic timing, photos of happy, outrageously messy toddlers (and exhausted parents) complement a tongue-in-cheek running dialogue, interspersed with factual asides that define basic concepts of chemistry. So rest assured, with a high chair tray as a lab bench, your precocious little one can master chemistry multiple times a day!

Who knew something as simple as mealtime could be the perfect place to explore scientific principles? This book takes scientific vocabulary and breaks it down in terms of a real-life experience in a young child’s life. I have my doubts that a baby/toddler will walk around stating the scientific vocabulary at that age, but I do think it sets the stage for a way of thinking and exploring the world around them that will aid their scientific minds as they progress. I think it is even better as an aid to parents to see how they can be presenting information to their child that increases conversation which builds language in general. It might even fill in gaps in parents’ vocabulary so they have the background knowledge to help their children learn as they grow. I like the photographs and the variety of children represented and the simple larger words meant for the young child while it is backed up in smaller words at the bottom for the parents or to read to older children.
